 8.Punctuation

          အင်္ဂလိပ်စာရေးသားရာတွင် အောက်ပါကိစ္စရပ်များအတွက် (Punctuation Marks) ကို သုံးရသည်။

***အဓိပ္ပါယ် ပေါ်လွင်စေရန်

***လေးနက်မှုသိသာစေရန်

***အနက်မတူ ကွဲပြားမှုကို ရှောင်ရှားစေရန်

***အပြောတွင် အသံအနေအထားနှင့် အဆိုင်းအငံ့တို့ကို သိသာစေရန်

11. Slash ( / )

*** Alternate words နှင့် စကားစုများကို ပိုင်းခြားရာတွင် သုံးသည်။

Eg: have a pudding and / or cheese

Single/ Married/ widowed/ divorced

*** အင်တာနက်ဝဘ်ဆိုဒ်နှင့် အီးမေးလ်လိပ်စာများရှာရာတွင် သုံးသည်။

12. Quotation Marks ( ‘        ’ or “   ”)

*** တိုက်ရိုက်အဆိုကို သွင်းထားသည်။

Eg: He said, “ It will happen. ”

“ Why on earth did you do that? ” he asked.

“ I’ll fetch it,” she replied.

*** အထူးသုံးနှုန်းထားသော စကားလုံးများကို ဖော်ပြသည်။

Eg: He said he was a “ businessman ”, but he was really a confidence trickster.

He told me in no uncertain terms to ‘ get lost ’.

Thousands were imprisoned in the name of ‘ national security ’.

*** ဆိုရိုးများ၊ စကားပုံများကို ဖော်ပြရာတွင် သုံးသည်။

Eg: Do you know the origin of the saying: ‘ A little learning is a dangerous thing ’?

*** ကဗျာ၊ဆောင်းပါး၊ ဝတ္ထုနှင့် စာအုပ်အမည်များကို ဖော်ပြသည်။

I was watching ‘ Match of the Day ’.

*** American English တွင် Quotation Marks ကို Double Quotation Marks ( “  ” ) သုံးသည်။

Eg: “ Help! I’m drowning! ”

13. Brackets / Perentheres (   )

* တိုးချဲ့စကားစု၊ ပေယျာလကန် စကားစုများကို ပြသည်။

Eg: Three old ships (now out of commission) will be scrapped.

Mount Roibson (12 927 feet) is the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies.

He thinks that modern music (i.e. anything written after 1900) is rubbish.

This moral ambiguity is a feature of Shakespeare’s later works (see Chapter Eight).

* ရေးထားသော ကိန်းဂဏန်းကို ဂဏန်းဖြင့် ဆက်လက်ဖော်ပြရာ၌ သုံးသည်။

14. Square Brackets [ ]

*** စကားလုံးကို သဒ္ဒါနည်းလမ်းကျ မှန်ကန်စေရန်အတွက် ထည့်သွင်းအသုံးပြုသည်။

15. Italics ( စာလုံးစောင်း )

Eg: I’m not going to do it- you are.

… proposal which we cannot accept under any circumstances.

*** စာအုပ်အမည်များနှင့် ကစားနည်းများကို ဖော်ပြရာတွင် သုံးသည်။

Eg: Joyce’s Ulysses

*** နိုင်ငံခြားစကားလုံးများနှင့် စကားစုများကို ဖော်ပြရာတွင် သုံးသည်။

Eg: the English oak (Quercus robur)

16. Quotion Conversation

*** စကားပြောခန်းများတွင် သုံးသည်။

Eg: ‘ You’re sure of this?’ I asked.

He nodded grimly.

‘ I’m certain ’.

*** တိုက်ရိုက်စကားပြောကို ညွှန်ပြသည့် ကြိယာများနှင့် တွဲသုံးသည်။

Eg: ‘ That’s all I know, ’ said Nick.

Nick said, ‘ That’s all I know. ’

‘ Why? ’ asked Nick.

*** တိုက်ရိုက်စကားနှင့် တစ်ဆင့်ခံစကားတို့ကို တစ်ဆက်တည်းပြောရာတွင် Double quotation marks ကို သုံးသည်။

Eg: ‘ But you said you loved me! ’ “ I’ll never leave you, Sue, as long as I live.” That’s what you said, isn’t it?’
